Itawuli, which translates to towel in Xhosa, is a beautiful towel inspired by the African landscape and heritage. With its intricate patterns, bold and warm colors, this towel is a definite keepsake. The stripe detail that runs through the middle of the towel is a favored pattern used in the traditional woolen Basotho Blankets. These blankets were initially woven in England and this stripe was originally a mistake through lack of communication, it however became very popular amongst communities in South Africa so was then incorporated into the design.
This flat weave hand towel is individually woven in South Africa using only the highest quality natural fibers giving it these unique features:
Low bulk uses less power for wash and dry
Compact for traveling
Established in 1998, Mungo is a proudly South African company in the business of designing, weaving and producing luxurious, high quality homeware textiles. Their wide range of products includes linens, throws, towels, bedding, and apparel. Mungo was founded by Master Weaver Stuart Holding. Through Stuart’s skill and passion for weaving he restored two antique looms and created the Mungo Working Weaving Museum. Since then Stuart has accumulated a small collection of looms from different weaving eras and developed Mungo’s wide range of products. Today Mungo remains a family-run business, crossing generations. They have three weaving operations. Their working Weaving Museum has become our creative hub where all our sampling is done on some of our oldest looms. This is situated at Old Nick Village (Mungo’s HQ) and is open to the public to experience these looms in action. The majority of production takes place at the Mungo Mill, which is 15 minutes from Mungo HQ, in the farmlands of The Crags. Their boutique mill comprises of their own CMT, inspection and warping equipment along with the more ‘modern’ Rapier looms, which allow them to weave wider fabrics.
